FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — On July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would not be seeking reelection.
Several current and former Arkansas lawmakers voiced their reactions on social media.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on X
“Not fit to run for president, not fit to serve as president.
Biden should resign immediately.”
Former Gov. Mike Huckabee on X
“Biden bails out saying he’s not able to be a candidate. But he thinks he’s able to still be President? I truly believe being President is harder than being candidate. Unless he really HASN’T been functioning as President anyway, which isn’t the least bit comforting.”
Former President Bill Clinton and Former First Lady Hillary Clinton on X
“President Biden has capped his extraordinary career of service with a Presidency that has lifted America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a battered economy, strengthened our democracy, and restored our standing in the world. By any measure, he has advanced our founders’ charge to build a more perfect union and his own stated goal of restoring the soul of our nation.
We join millions of Americans in thanking President Biden for all he has accomplished, standing up for America time and again, with his North Star always being what’s best for the country.
We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her.
We’ve lived through many ups and downs, but nothing has made us more worried for our country than the threat posed by a second Trump term. He has promised to be a dictator on day one, and the recent ruling by his servile Supreme Court will only embolden him to further shred the Constitution. Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it.”
Senator Tom Cottonon X
“Joe Biden succumbed to a coup by Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and Hollywood donors, ignoring millions of Democratic primary votes.
Donald Trump took a bullet for democracy.”
“Democrats can take Joe Biden out of the White House, but they can’t take their radical policies out of the Democratic Party.
Whoever runs for the Democrats will have the same failed ideas that have hurt the country under Joe Biden.”
Democratic Party of Arkansas in a statement
“Arkansas Democrats are incredibly proud of President Joe Biden today, not only for his responsive and selfless decision to step aside, but also for his steadfast leadership and historic accomplishments as our President for the past four years. Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration, more than $4 billion is being invested in Arkansas. Democrats will continue our commitment to working for a better Arkansas.”
Senate Minority Leader Greg Ledingon X
“President Biden serves our country with heart, integrity, and a commitment to fighting for everyday Americans. His achievements as president include passing a number of historic, bipartisan pieces of legislation during a time of deep division in Congress.
President Biden now caps off a life of selfless public service with one of the most selfless acts of all. I am sincerely grateful to our President, and I wish him and his family only the best in the years to come.
I’m fully committed to electing a president who’ll serve our nation’s highest office with integrity, steady leadership, and a deep commitment to fighting for everyday Americans.”
Lieutenant Gov. Leslie Rutledge on X
“Donald Trump’s strength & record of success pushed Biden out. Americans weren’t worried about Biden’s competency, they are worried about how his and the Democrat Party’s failed policies that hurt their families and endangered their lives. President Trump must win for America.
Remember the same Democrats who pushed Biden out are the same ones who keep pushing those failed policies which threaten American families lives and pocketbooks.”
Congressman Steve Womack in a statement
“I’m not surprised by his decision. It was a foregone conclusion. The real question now is who do they turn to? A Harris candidacy is problematic given her ties to Biden and her failure as the Border Czar. Interesting days ahead, for sure, for Democrats. My recommendation to my fellow Republicans is to run hard on the issues facing everyday Americans—securing our border, lowering inflation, and making our country safer. Republicans need to remain united behind President Trump.”
