How do I get the most out of my tutoring session? ›

Start and end your tutoring session on time. Speak at a volume that does not detract from other students' learning. Turn off your gadgets and phones, do not talk on the phone, or if absolutely necessary, take the call outside of the Center. Follow the rules and guidelines of the various tutoring center.

What's more, students themselves seem to want to come to school when they know they're going to receive personalized attention. In essence, the two findings suggest compounding benefits for embedding extra help in the school day: academic improvement and better attendance.

Speak, write, and understand English fluently and clearly. Limit WVC work hours to 18 hours/week or less, no matter the number of positions/departments. Be eligible to work on campus. Register for a minimum of 6 units at WVC in any Fall/Spring semester during which you wish to work as a Peer Tutor.

Each student is responsible for arranging their own housing. West Valley College does not have any housing or dormitories for students.

For Most Students, Once a Week Tutoring is Ideal

For most students, it's just right. Less than once a week is just too inconsistent, and consistency is key! More than once a week is sometimes necessary, but we really want to avoid doing too much.

Tailoring to Individual Needs

Younger children may benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions (typically 30 mins to 1 hour, twice weekly), while older students might engage better in slightly longer sessions (typically 1.5 to 2 hours, weekly).

One or two absences won't hurt your college chances, but a series of absences or a four-month break from classes might. If you've missed a whole semester or year, or your grades have suffered from repeated absences, you need to address it.

Results revealed that attendance patterns, such as missing one class per week or three days of school per month, and time spent exercising, can negatively affect a student's GPA.

Research has shown that online tutoring can be just as effective as in-person tutoring, and in some cases, even more effective. For example, one study found that students who received online tutoring in math were 15% more likely to pass their state math test than students who did not receive tutoring.
